Wu-Tang New Album Stunt: a Return to Artist Centered Music

Who needs iTunes?  Not the Wu-Tang Clan.

Music is an art form yet, but it has come to the point where music can be shared in numerous ways. You can simply search for an album on Google, find a zip file, and then download it for free. There are about three things that could happen: you get a recording of some dude singing a cover of it, the file is entirely empty, or somehow the police find out you illegally  downloaded Culture Club’s greatest hits album (I actually own a CD of their greatest hits and I do not regret one cent) and you get into whatever trouble awaits you.

The point is that if music is art, then why is it not treated that way? Well, it seems that Wu-Tang Clan feels that way. Wu-Tang Clan is making and selling only one copy of their secret double album called The Wu – Once Upon A Time In Shaolin and it’s not even currently in the United States. The never heard before album is being held in an engraved box made of silver and nickel in Morocco.

RZA told Forbes in an interview, “We’re about to put out a piece of art like nobody else has done in the history of modern music. We’re making a single sale collector’s item. This is like somebody having the scepter of an Egyptian King.” Apparently, the album is going to be put in museums and is being heard in a private listening type of setting and the cost of attendance is surely going to be similar to another major exhibit. Along with that, in order to listen to the secret album, those who attend have to use headphones that are provided by the museum in order to stop a leak from occurring.

The album will be going around to museums and art galleries as a type of listening tour and when it’s done, it will be put on sale to the public. I am going to make the assumption that the price of the album will be sky-high expensive (the assumed price will start at 7 digits). Whoever buys the album can either keep it to themselves or leak it to the internet.

What Wu-Tang Clan is doing is amazing and it will most likely revolutionize how we perceive music. The news doesn’t stop there though. Wu-Tang Clan is also releasing their 20th anniversary album titled A Better Tomorrow sometime in the summer. Wu-Tang Clan has came back and they are going to shake the music industry.
