Microsoft Buys Mojang for How Much?!

On Monday Microsoft announced that they will be buying Mojang, a Swedish video game developer in Stockholm for 2.5 billion dollars. By buying Mojang they will inherit Minecraft, the widely popular sandbox indie game.

When playing Minecraft players can build constructions out of cubes in an animated world. This game also includes exploration, gathering resources, crafting and combat. There’s also different game modes. For instance, survival mode, where the player has to get supplies to build and keep up his/her health and hunger, and creative mode where the player has unlimited amounts of supplies to build/make whatever they want and have the ability to. Lastly there’s an adventure mode where the player can make maps for other people to explore.

Markus “Notch” the former owner of Mojang and the creator of minecraft has decided to leave the company as soon as the deal with Microsoft is finalized and plans on going back to doing Ludum Dares and small web experiments. In his blog he writes, “I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games, and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits and I don’t try to change the world”

The deal is apparently going to be finalized sometime in late September. Minecraft is one of the most popular games of the year and has won five awards recently having one in 2011. Microsoft doesn’t doubt that its success will change anytime soon.
