Mercury the New Earth?

Mercury the New Earth?

Recently research has stated that Mercury’s magnetic field has once been the same as the very earth we have come to love. NASA came to the discovery from their messenger spacecraft. Mercury has been an enigmatic planet for many years, meaning Mercury has a high density made up of 60% metal. Before flybys were used as a way to check out the planet.

The Mariner 10 was the little flyby that had checked out Mercury’s surface and then had come to reveal that the planet has a magnetic field that of Earth’s. The only difference is that Mercury’s is 100 times weaker than that of Earth’s; Meaning the planet has to have some liquid in its core. Many felt the idea to be surprising considering that the planet is so tiny, they thought it to solidify quickly.

The information had come from a messenger which launched in 2004, which was in space for a decade, which did orbit around Mercury for four of the ten years. The mission was suppose to last only a year, one messenger even ran out of fuel crashing into Mercury as it did. NASA is certainly glad the mission went on longer though leading to the finding of magnetized rocks. They even found that the age of the rocks report back to 3.8 billion years, magnetized by Mercury’s very own magnetic field.
