In July 2020, both the CIA and The Washington Post confirmed that an elite Russian military spy unit was paying Taliban fighters to kill U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

Dating back to April of 2017, Army General John Nicholson the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, appeared to confirm that Russian operatives were funding the Taliban. The New York Times reports that Russia had even provided weapons in the past.

According to intelligence gleaned from U.S. interrogations of captured Taliban militants, and provided by the CIA to Congress and the President, several U.S. deaths have been caused by these bounties on U.S. and Coalition forces.

Some Taliban member even go as far as infiltrating Afghan security forces under cover. These police and soldiers are allies of the U.S. in the war against terrorism in Afghanistan. When the Taliban infiltrate the security force they are able to get up close and personal with U.S. troops, and this can sometimes result in “green on blue” fighting, which is when Afghan security forces attack U.S troops.

“If Russians are offering money to kill Americans or, for that matter, other westerners as well, there will be an enormous price to pay,” said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, to Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty. Pompeo further asserted that Iran was also arming the Taliban.

President Trump has apparently not brought up the accusations to Russian president Vladimir Putin as he considered the information a “hoax.” Why the President does not trust the CIA to provide accurate information is a different problem.
