Wish You Could Stop Procrastinating?

Summer Bernard, Staff Reporter

Have you ever waited until the very last minute to do something? No matter how long you had to work on it? [Seniors: these are rhetorical questions, not personal attacks; that said, how are those college applications going?]

And have you ever wondered why you procrastinate? Well it might be surprising to know that there is a reason why people procrastinate, and not just because they decided to sit on their phone or play video games for 10 hours.

Procrastination is the act of delaying or postponing something. It’s one of those good at the time and not too great later on type of things. While you might think that the reason you procrastinate is just because you don’t feel like doing what you have to do, there might be more to it than just that reason alone.

Why People Procrastinate.

There are actually many reasons why someone would procrastinate. One reason is we rely on our self control to get something done and also our motivation to actually get something done, but there are things that affect our mood and therefore affect our motivation and ability to get things done . Some of the things things/ could be:

  • Anxiety
  • The fear of failure, evaluation, negative feedback.
  • Depression
  • Lack of motivation, energy, control, etc.
  • Boredom
  • Insecurity/ Self-doubt

But procrastination might not always be the lack of motivation or a bad mood. It can also be:

  • A bias against a certain task- Maybe not liking or not being good at something which causes you to postpone it.
  • Underestimating time- Thinking you have a longer time to do something or thinking you can get it done in a shorter amount of time.
  • Perfectionism- Thinking whatever you are doing has to be perfect which keeps you from starting.
  • Exhaustion (either physical or mental)

These are just some of the things that might cause you to procrastinate. It could be more of an emotional issue that prevents you from doing something or just a time or dislike on a task type issue, but along with these there could be more reasons to procrastinate.

How to stop procrastinating.

Although it is easier to procrastinate and harder to do what you need to do earlier, it doesn’t hurt to try and get out of the habit of procrastinating to help with a better future of getting things done. So a few ways to help with procrastination are:

  • Starting things earlier than you think you need to.
  • Work on your work in sections- maybe do a little this hour/day and another this hour/day.
  • Remind yourself what you’re doing this for.
  • Be kind to yourself- Try to be a little optimistic about your work.
  • Get in a zone- pick a good time and place with no distractions, maybe play some music if it helps, and just concentrate the best you can on your work.

These are just some of the reasons why people may procrastinate and some ways to help stop procrastination. Now that you might know a reason why you do it, take the time to try and prevent yourself from procrastinating. While it may be hard at first, it could definitely be better for you in the long run.
